An ID card can help keep your kid safe.

Kids identification (ID) cards can be very easy to assemble at home. There are various options for assembling a kid's ID card by hand or through using the computer. Make sure you have the child's most recent photo, heavy card stock and something to laminate the card with and you are ready to get started.

  1. Decide What Type of Card

    • 1

      Choose a method for creating your kid's ID card. You can hand write an ID card or create a card on the computer and print it on card stock or heavy paper. Homeschool Buyer's Co-op provides a free online template for a kid's ID card that you can print. Microsoft Office provides ID card templates that are the size of business cards and can be printed from a home computer.

      Decide what information you want to include on the ID card. KidSafe ID creates ID cards for children with their name, age, height, weight, sex, parents' names and a phone number. The Homeschool Buyers Co-op does not put addresses or phone numbers on ID cards.

      Choose a layout and size for the ID card if you are assembling it by hand. You can put the photo at the left with the information down the right, the photo at the right with the information down the left, the photo in the middle with the information below or the photo on the front and information on the back. Most ID cards are 2.25 by 3.75 inches, but you can make the card a size that works for you.

    Hand Written ID Card

      Measure and cut the ID card to the chosen size. Use a ruler to mark the height and width of the card with a pen on card stock or heavy paper. Cut out the card along the lines.

      Cut a head shot of your child to fit on the upper corner or one side of the card. Glue the photo in place.

      Write your child's name and other identifying information neatly on the card. Use a ruler and pencil to make faint lines if you want to be have a guide for writing in a straight line.

      Laminate the card with clear contact paper, self-laminating sheets or a business card-sized laminating pouch. Put the completed card between the sheets of whatever you are using to laminate and press down gently from one end of the card to the other. Press out any bubbles as you go along.

    Computer Generated ID Card

      To make a kid's ID card on the computer enter the information and upload the image on the template. If you do not have an image you can upload just add a printed and cut photo to the ID card after it is printed.

      Print the ID card on heavy paper or card stock and cut it out. Use a ruler to measure and draw faint lines to cut along if needed.

      Laminate the ID card with clear contact paper, self-laminating sheets or a business card size laminating pouch. Place your kid's ID card between the sheets and press any bubbles out as you seal the card.
