How to Use a Slim Jim Tool
Slim jim is the common name for a lockout tool used by locksmiths to enter a car without the use of a key or need to pick the lock. Slim jims are long thin strips of metal (generally spring steel), around 2 to 4 cm wide, with hooking notches on the end. Learning how to use a slim jim is a worthy skill for anyone prone to losing their car keys, however, the majority of modern cars are now built with defenses against the tool.

1
Locate the rubber seal which runs along the door at the base of the window of the driver or passenger's seat. Place the small wedge between the rubber seal and window to create a gap large enough to slide the slim jim down in to the door. In the absence of a rubber wedge, a matchbook or stick can be used.

2
Slide the slim jim in to the gap and locate the connector rod, which should be inside the door, between the door handle and lock. Use the notch on the tool to hook the rod, which will be close to the locking mechanism at the edge of the door. This may take several attempts to do.

3
Push up or pull down the rod to rotate the lock mechanism in to its open position.

4
Enter the car.

Tips & Warnings
Slim jims are commonly used by car thieves. If used incorrectly, they can damage the locking mechanism so that it does not work, even with the key. If a lock mechanism suddenly stops working, it can be a sign that someone has tampered with it using a slim jim incorrectly.
