How to Find a Wedding Officiant in Vermont
One of the most important aspects in planning a wedding can be choosing an officiant. This is the person who actually performs the marriage ceremony. It may be a priest, rabbi, imam, priestess or any other kind of religious authority. The officiant may also be a nondenominational minister, local government official or layperson. Of course, choosing an officiant depends on the desires and beliefs of the couple themselves, but there are some steps that any Vermont resident can take to make the process easier.

1
Sit down with your partner and go over your own goals for the ceremony. Questions to be asked include; what faith should the officiant represent? Would you prefer a man or a woman? Does it need to be someone that you know, or would you be happy with a stranger?

2
Look through an online listing of Vermont wedding officiants (see Resources). Officiants may be listed by area, or they may all be found in one listing. Read the various officiants descriptions and, with your partner, collect a short list of possible officiants for your wedding.

3
Call every number on the list and speak with the various officiants. Questions to ask may include, is the officiant available for the time and location of your wedding? What prices do they charge? What sort of topics will they be speaking on as they officiate? Speak with your partner to identify which officiant best represents your values and can work with your own aesthetic, time, and budget constraints.

4
Confirm that your officiant is a judge or a licensed minister, rabbi, or priest authorized by his religious organization to perform weddings. Generally, wedding officiants are required to be residents of Vermont.
