How to Grade Voice Lessons
Voice lessons are one way for children and adults to learn how to sing. Through voice lessons, a student at any age can work with a teacher, one on one, to develop singing and music reading skills. Grading a voice lesson means you, as a teacher, must decide how well the voice lesson went and whether or not the goals were achieved. There are several different ways that you can grade a voice lesson so students understand how they are doing.

1
Listen to the way the student sings during the voice lesson. Make sure that he is able to carry a tune, has improved in whatever song he is singing, and is able to read musical expressions like tempo and dynamic suggestions. Give him a grade based out of ten on his general singing ability.

2
Ask the student to sight read a particular portion of music. He should sight read the notes, the tempo, and the dynamics as well as the words. Give him a grade out of ten on this feat, depending on whether or not he was able to do it or if he made any mistakes.

Check your notes to see if the student had any issues that you asked him to work on from his last lesson to this one. If he did, ask him about those issues or have him demonstrate whatever it was that you wanted him to learn. Then give him a grade out of ten on his ability to improve.

Add up your totals and give the student a percentage for his lesson. Then, you'll be able to see if the student is getting better at each lesson, as he should be.
