Make fashionable jersey scarves from recycled T-shirts.

Fashionable scarves are a quick way to update an outfit. Most department stores want as much for these simple fabric accessories as they do for a piece of clothing. Make your own jersey scarves with fringe by recycling old T-shirts from your closet. The jersey fabric of a T-shirt does not fray and does not need to be hemmed. When raw jersey edges are stretched they form a natural curl. These fabric qualities allow you to make a scarf quickly, without the need for a sewing machine.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay an old T-shirt on your work surface. Cut across the width of the T-shirt body from under one armpit to under the other. The top of the T-shirt and the sleeves are not needed for the scarf.

    • 2

Cut off the hem of the T-shirt. You now have a tube with raw edges on each open edge.

    • 3

Lay the tube flat. Place a thumb inside one open end of the tube on each side edge of the T-shirt body. Pull your thumbs outward to stretch the cut opening. This will cause the edge to curl.

    • 4

Lay the tube flat with the rolled edge at the top. Cut 1/2-inch-wide fringe around the body of the tube from the straight cut edge of the jersey fabric to within two inches of the curled top edge.

    • 5

Pull each individual fringe strip. This will stretch the fringe and cause the sides and length to curl. Printed images on the T-shirt will become distorted in the fringe, but will still add colorful accents to the finished jersey scarf.

    • 6

Drape the fringed scarf over your head and around your neck. The two inch uncut end of the tube is the top. Wear the scarf like a necklace, off one shoulder, draping down your back or twist and double the ring of the scarf as a collar around the neck.

Tips & Warnings

  • Experiment with recycled T-shirts in a variety of sizes for different drape options.
