The Mr. Coffee Espresso Maker takes the fuss out of making a cup of espresso. With the machine, you can make a cup of espresso similar to a cup of coffee in just a few minutes. The machine can also make cappuccino. Since cappuccino is made from one-third espresso, learning how to make espresso is essential to making drinks with the machine. You can make up to four cups of espresso or cappuccino with the machine. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Fresh, finely ground espresso beans

  • Metal frothing cup
  • Skim or 2-percent milk

Instructions

  1. Espresso

    • 1

      Turn the control knob on the Mr. Coffee Steam Espresso machine into the "Off" position.

      Fill the carafe with enough cold water to make the desired number of espresso servings. The carafe has markings on the side to indicate when there is enough water to fill two or four cups. If you're making cappuccino, the fill lines are slightly different than espresso. To make two cups of cappuccino, fill the carafe midpoint between the two and four cup mark on the carafe. To make four cups, fill the carafe to the top of the metal band on the carafe.

      Pull off the water reservoir cap and pour the water from the carafe into the water reservoir. Then, put the reservoir cap back on and make sure the cap is on tight.

      Put a filter in the filter basket. Fill the basket with fresh, finely ground espresso coffee, up to either the two- or four-cup mark on the basket. Wipe any excess coffee from the rim of the filter holder with a paper towel.

      Move the retainer clip back on the filter basket until it fits into the groove. Then turn the basket to the right until it locks into position.

      Put on the carafe cover. The cover opening should face the spout. Place the covered carafe on the drip tray. Both the brew basket and decanter handles must be aligned.

      Plug the power cord into the power outlet. The control knob must still be in the "Off" position. Once plugged in, rotate the control knob to the "coffee cup" symbol to turn it on. The brewing process will begin. It will take 3 to 5 minutes for espresso to pour into the carafe.

      Turn the control knob to the "Off" position. If you are making cappuccino, continue on to the next section.

    Cappuccino

      Follow steps 1 through 7 in the "Espresso" section above. Except in Step 2, fill the carafe for the designated amount of servings for cappuccino. To make two cups of cappuccino, fill the carafe midpoint between the two and four cup mark on the carafe. To make four cups, fill the carafe to the top of the metal band on the carafe.

      Fill the metal frothing cup half way with cold, skim or 2-percent milk. You can use regular milk but skim and 2-percent milk froth better.

      Hold the metal frothing cup of milk underneath the frothing tube. The tube should only be slightly emerged in the milk. Then turn the control knob to the "Steam" symbol. Move the cup in a circular motion for about 45 seconds to froth the milk.

      Insert the frothing tube deeper into the cup of milk after it is has doubled its volume to heat it. Don't allow the milk to exceed 150 degrees Fahrenheit. Insert a beverage thermometer to check the temperature of the milk. Turn the control knob to "Off." Then remove the frothing tube from the metal frothing cup.

      Pour the espresso you prepared in Section 1 into your coffee cup. Then pour the steamed milk into the cup and spoon on the frothed milk. Your total proportions should be 1/3 espresso, 1/3 steamed milk and 1/3 frothed milk.

Tips & Warnings

  • The machine builds pressure. It must be depressurized after each use. Turn the control knob to "Off" and unplug the power cord. Move the control knob to the "Steam" symbol. If steam comes out, move the knob back to "Off." To release the pressure, immerse the frothing tube in a pitcher of water, then turn the control knob to "Steam" again. When the frothing tube stops releasing steam, turn the machine off and remove the cap. The machine is depressurized.
