When you are suffering from foot pain that is due to hypothyroidism, you are apt to experience several types of pain, including pain related to joints and pain that stems from foot muscles, all of which are affected when your thyroid isn't functioning correctly.

What is Hypothyroidism?

Learn that hypothyroidism is a condition whereby the thyroid is not producing enough thyroid hormones and the thyroid becomes sluggish. When this condition is present, it can result in a painful foot condition called tarsal tunnel syndrome, which manifests itself by producing pain in the arch of your foot, tingling in the foot, burning and tingling. You may experience pain in your toes as well, according to Thyroid-Info.com. The pain will get worse the more you walk.

Understand that suffering from joint-related problems and muscle problems is often the outcome when an individual has hypothyroidism. When muscles swell, the muscles press on nerves, causing pain. Joints can become stiff and achy as a result of hypothyroidism. When this occurs, it is called "arthropathy," which is a disease of a joint. Hypothyroidism can also result in inflamed joints.

Note that tarsal tunnel pain can be the result of a damaged or compressed nerve in the foot, or an injured foot muscle. This causes pain in the ankle and toes, and throughout the foot. When blood can’t get to the sole of your foot because of nerve damage, this causes pain.

Put orthotics in your shoes. Orthotics are orthopedic devices that make wearing shoes more comfortable and supportive and that should eliminate some of your hypothyroid foot pain.

Get a diagnosis. Do not self-diagnose. If you think your thyroid is sluggish and you are experiencing foot pain, make an appointment to see your physician. Your doctor may give you injections of corticosteroids to reduce the discomfort and pain you are experiencing.
