How to Repay an Army Disability Overpayment
Army veterans can make disability claims through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Once a claim is approved, the VA uses direct deposit to put money directly in the claimant's bank account. When a claimant's status changes, he is responsible for reporting those changes to the VA immediately. Status changes include the improvement or worsening of a disability, a new condition or an eradicated condition tied to an Army disability. In some cases, the VA accidentally overpays a veteran; when that happens, the money has to be returned to the VA.

1
Find your VA case number. It is a nine-digit number located on all your correspondence from the VA. In most cases, your VA case number is your Social Security number.
-
2
Call the VA toll-free at 800-827-1000. Press "1" if you are calling from a touch-tone phone. Stay on the line if you are not using a touch-tone phone.
-
-
3
Press "0" to speak with an operator. When you are connected, tell the operator there has been an error in your payment and you need to repay the VA.
-
4
Give the operator your VA case number. The operator will transfer you to a specialist.
-
5
Provide the specialist with your case number and answer questions to ensure the security of your account. You may be asked to provide your address, telephone number and other identifying information.
-
6
Tell the specialist how much you were overpaid and the date on which the overpayment was deposited into your account. The specialist will file the necessary forms and will garnish the overpayment amount from your next disability payment. For example, if you ordinarily receive a $1,000 monthly payment and you were overpaid $500, the next payment you receive will be $500. Once the overpayment has been repaid, normal disability payments will resume.
