Shop smart and you may never have to pay for toothpaste again.

Stores always boast the lowest prices, but free is even better. A common misconception is you can only save a few dollars each week using coupons, which can net free items and save hundreds of dollars when used carefully. Snacks, staple grocery items, drinks, organic foods and toiletries can all be purchased for near nothing with careful planning and execution. However, toiletries and health and beauty products are often free with coupons. Long expiration dates on these products make them easy to stockpile.

Instructions

Research the newspapers in your area and find out which ones offer coupons. Most Sunday papers do, but they normally cost around two dollars. Call the office of any free or cheap newspapers in your area and ask if coupon inserts are included in their papers, and on what days. Make a list of the newspapers that do include coupons.

Buy three or more newspapers each week. You may decide to collect more, if free or cheap newspapers with coupons are available in your area.

    • 3

Print coupons for multiple brands of health and beauty products. Various websites offer printable coupons from many manufacturers (see "Resources"). Manufacturers often offer coupons directly from their own websites. In most cases, the website will allow you to print two coupons per computer.

Browse store circulars weekly, and remember that stores have different rewards programs. For example, if Colgate toothpaste is on sale for $1 at Kroger and you have a fifty-cent coupon for that item, Kroger will double the coupon and the item will be free. CVS offers Extra Care Bucks in the form of a coupon to be spent on any future purchase. They frequently run "Free After Extra Care Bucks" promotions that net a free product. You can use coupons on these promotions.

Note the sales in the circulars each week, and locate any coupons you have for a particular item. Coupon databases are available to find the date of the insert where the coupon is located. Calculate the final cost of the item. If it is free, buy enough of that item to use for several months. This will ensure you have enough stock on hand to last until the next sale.

Tips & Warnings

  • Break away from brand loyalty to save the most money. You will likely find that a brand you get for free is just as good.

  • Never copy any coupon, even printable coupons. This is considered fraud and can sometimes be traced back to the consumer.
