How to Find Ship Records for Your Pomeranian's Genealogy
Pomerania, though the actual country no longer exists, was once a region in the Slavic areas of Eastern Europe. The emigration from the country wasn't common until the 1800s and was much more prevalent after about 1820. Although many Pomeranian people went to Germany and other parts of Europe, others came to the United States via ships. Ships kept passenger lists and manifests, which makes it easier to assemble genealogical information.

1
Piece together as much of your Pomeranian genealogy as you can by talking to your living family members and locating important documents such as birth certificates, marriage licenses and other public records. Websites such as Find People, Abika and USA People Search are some websites to start with for recent information.
-
2
Locate when and where your Pomeranian relatives first came to America. If you know the date and the direction -- East coast or West coast -- you can narrow down your search to the ships that were in port on that day.

3
Check the immigration records from Ellis or Angel Island as well as ship manifests to match up where your Pomeranian ancestors arrived. Depending on the year of immigration, the records might state which ship the person came on to give you a lead. In the 1800s, records were minimal and didn't offer much information, but after the 1920s, records became more comprehensive and complete.
-
4
Contact the line that owns the ship your ancestors came in on once you've found the ship and the name of the line. This may be impossible if the line is defunct and not currently owned, but if someone else purchased the line, you can contact the new owner and ask for a copy of the ship records concerning your ancestors.

Tips & Warnings
You may not be able to locate certain pieces of information if they're too far in the past. Not all records survive, and there is no guarantee that the records you want have been preserved.
