How to Determine How Much Beer for a Wedding

One important task that you do not want to overlook when planning a wedding reception is how much beer to purchase for your wedding reception. It is very important to have enough beer so that you do not run out, but you also want to be sure to not purchase so much that you're left with a massive surplus to deal with after the wedding is over. Take the time to properly plan out the amount that you need to satisfy your guests.

  • Multiply the number of guests attending your wedding by four; this is the average number of drinks a wedding guest will have throughout the course of the evening.

  • Decide whether you will be serving domestic beer, imported beer or a combination of both, as they come in different sized kegs. Base your decision on both the preferences of your guests and your budget.

  • Use 10 oz cups for guests to drink. It is easy to calculate how much beer to purchase when multiplying by this number. Purchase the cups in advance or check to see if your reception hall can provide them.

  • Purchase a half-barrel keg, which contains 15.5 gallons of domestic beer,in order to fill 200 cups. Or you can also get a quarter-barrel keg, which contains 7.5 gallons of domestic beer and fills 100 cups. If you prefer to serve imported beer, these kegs are sized differently with a half-barrel containing 10.7 gallons, and filling approximately 140 cups, and a quarter keg filling about 70 cups.

  • Buy a little extra in case your guests decide to drink more than you expected, as you do not want to run out of beer at your wedding reception.
