How Can I Tell What Kind of Power Supply My PC Has?

Computer components require a specific amount of power to work properly. If the power supply on your computer isn't powerful enough, or it is failing, your computer may encounter errors. Examples of problems caused by power supply failure include the computer being unable to boot, the graphics card not working properly or at all and your CD drive failing to read a disc. You can quickly identify how powerful your power supply is, as well as checking it for any physical damage, by opening your computer case and examining the supply.

Turn your computer off. Disconnect the power supply cable, along with all other cables in the computer.

    • 2

Remove your computer's case cover. Computer cases come in many different configurations, so removing the cover may be as complicated as unscrewing the cover or as simple as opening up a side panel on the machine.

Locate your power supply. Most standard ATX cases place the power supply in the upper left corner of the case, but you may find that it's near the bottom instead. Find the label on the side of the power supply. The label identifies the manufacturer of the supply as well as the total wattage available.
