1
Be honest about your present state of mind. Are you resentful? Scared? Overwhelmed? Negative feelings bind with your inner energy to keep you in a constant state of discomfort. To clear your mind of negative thoughts, you have to confront them one by one and let them go. Most negative emotions come from past, unresolved conflicts. Rather than focusing on the past, focus your energy on the future and the self that you want to be. Write down your goals. Why do you want to find your inner power? What do you hope to gain? Being specific about the changes you want to make in your life allow you to focus your energy in the right direction.

Practice self-discipline and honesty. Being honest 100 percent of the time is critical to harnessing your inner power. Self-discipline includes being on time, following through with commitments and avoiding misinforming. Our society has created a culture of appeasement where "sure, no problem" is an expected response to every demand. An example is a woman who asks a friend if she can meet at 5 p.m. The friend knows that the earliest she can be there is 5:30, but she says "Sure, no problem" because she doesn't want to disappoint. This cycle of overcommitting and dishonesty creates stress on both parties. Until you can be 100 percent true to your word, your inner power will be stifled.

Practice introspection. Introspection is different from meditation in that you are focusing on your self, your actions and your reactions. Choose a time of day where you set aside five or 10 minutes to think about what has happened and how you felt during the day. Often in introspection, individuals find that negative reactions to life's ups and downs can impact how they feel the entire day. For example, a man is cut off by a rude driver on his way home from work. He reacts angrily and that anger stays with him long into the evening, preventing him from enjoying time with his family. Use introspection to identify and break patterns in your day that limit your ability to focus and be positive.

Practice devotion. Devotion and praying are not the same thing. No matter what your faith, all humans develop their inner power through devotional techniques. As you go through your day, look for a higher power in yourself, in people you meet and in the world. That higher power can be in the form of witnessing joy in others, expressing gratitude for simple actions you witness in your day and a connection and understanding of other people and their unique life experiences.

Keep your mind open to the new possibilities that come your way. As you release your negative emotions and become more attuned to yourself and others, the world will seem to open itself up to you. Harness opportunities to continue to discover yourself. Take more risks and say "yes" to new activities that you haven't experienced. As you experience more, your insight grows and your confidence in yourself is strengthened. Continue to release, practice introspection and devotion and your inner power will continue to grow.
