How to Be a Marines Pen-Pal
The men and women serving overseas in the United States Military are fighting on a daily basis to protect the freedoms of those back home. Many of us wonder what we can do to make the lives of these Marines easier when we can't be there to serve alongside them. One way to touch the life of a soldier is as simple as becoming their pen pal. A quick Google search will prove that there are a number of programs out there that help connect civilians to Marines in search of a friend from a familiar place.

1
Make a list of friends you knew in high school that were a part of the ROTC program, or that you knew to be going on to join the military after graduation. Contact them or their family members to see if they are currently deployed overseas and would like a pen pal.
-
2
Ask friends and family if they know of anyone in the military. Chances are you know someone who knows someone who is currently deployed, and they can connect you with that person.

3
Contact the nearest military base to your home, and see if they have any pen-pal programs available. You can do this by visiting the Contact Us section of any base's Web site. The general contact may be able to direct you to someone who can get you connected with someone who is deployed and in need of correspondence.
-
4
Get in touch with any local organizations that support the military, such as the American Legion or the VFW. These groups often have programs in which you can adopt a pen pal in the marines.

5
Browse the Internet. There are a number of programs available on the web that connect deployed Marines with civilians who would like to write to them and send them care packages. NASCAR driver Ryan Rust has created one such program called Adopt a Hero, and the wife of a formerly deployed Marine created another called eMail our Military. You can sign up with any one of these groups.

Tips & Warnings
Just because you write a letter to a Marine does not mean you will receive one in return right away, if at all. Because of the nature of their jobs, their ability to maintain a correspondence is unpredictable.
