How to Use Express Scribe

Express Scribe is an audio transcription program that allows the user to convert interviews, meetings and speech into text. The program does not automatically convert audio files into text, so you must manually type what you hear into a text document. However, it contains a variety of features to make the process easier, such as a slider bar and quick rewinding and fast forwarding options. Either a foot pedal or hot keys can be used to control the program.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install Express Scribe, if it is not already present on your computer. It can be downloaded from the NCH website for free (see Resources).

    • 2

Attach a foot pedal to your computer or set up hot keys. A foot pedal is generally recommended, but hot keys may be used instead. Select "Pedal and Hot Keys..." under "File" and "Settings." Set the hot keys to your liking.

    • 3

Open the folder containing the audio file you wish to transcribe. Drag and drop the file into the Express Scribe window.

    • 4

Select a text file you wish to transcribe the data into. If you do not have one ready, Express Scribe is able to automatically create a Microsoft Word document for the transcription by clicking on the icon within the program's main window. If you do not have Microsoft Word installed on your system, you can select an alternate word processor.

    • 5

Click on "File," click "Settings" and select "Rewind and Fast Forward." This setting displays the current "Rewind" and "Fast Forward" time Express Scribe uses. When you press the appropriate hot key, the program will rewind or fast forward the audio file half a second, by default. If you wish to change the default settings, do so within this window. If you do not wish to change the settings, skip this step.

    • 6

Adjust the "Speed" slider, located near the bottom-right corner of the main Express Scribe window. This is used to adjust the playback speed of the audio file. Edit this setting to fit your personal preferences.

    • 7

Click on the "Play" button to begin transcribing the audio.
