Purchase a gun safe. Available in sizes both large and small, gun safes provide the utmost storage protection. Large gun safes can store up to 20 rifles, shotguns and other large firearms, as well as dozens of pistols, revolvers, handguns, ammunition and gun accessories. Large gun safes weigh 500 pounds or more, are fire resistant and come with a wide range of locks including combination, key lock or biometric locks.

Store them in a gun cabinet. Similar to a china cabinet, a gun cabinet is typically used to showcase a gun collection, though it can also be considered a place to store guns. The drawback is, that most gun cabinets feature lots of glass, which makes it easy for someone to break-in.

Lock your handguns in a lock box. Used to store smaller guns, like pistols and handguns, a lock box is like a miniature, portable vault. Constructed out of steel, lock boxes use a key, biometric or combination lock for security. Most can store one or two handguns. If you travel, some lock boxes meet TSA firearms guidelines. Others may come with foam lining to protect your weapon.

Find a good hiding spot. When it comes to storing a gun, the least expensive option is placing the weapon in a hiding spot. Typical places include closets, under the bed and in nightstands. Considered the least secure storage option, anyone can come across a hiding spot, children and burglars included. Your best bet when choosing a hiding spot is to completely disassemble the firearm, secure the lock and place the ammunition someplace separate from the gun. If possible, obtain an external lock for extra security.
