Write checks carefully to ensure they are correct.

Writing checks is one of several ways to exchange money. Use checks to pay bills or pay for services or goods. If you must send money through the mail, mailing a check is safer than sending cash. When you write out a check, write the dollar amount carefully, both in numbers and in words. When necessary, write a check with an even dollar amount to show that there are no cents.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the check amount with numbers, writing the numbers to the left of the decimal point. Write two zeros to the right of the decimal point to show that the dollar amount is even. For example, you might write $150.00.

    • 2

Add the check amount with words on the next line. Write the entire whole number first, the word "and" and then write the fraction to show that there are no cents. Using the same example, write "One hundred fifty and 00/100." You could also write "no/100" or "xx/100" to show no cents. According to the Banking Questions website, as long as the check writer's intent is obvious, the specific way you write the fraction is not that important.

    • 3

Draw a horizontal line to fill up the rest of this area on the check. Make the line begin immediately after the fraction and continue the line until you get to the preprinted word "dollars."

    • 4

Examine the check to ensure you made no errors. The dollar amount in numbers and words should match. If the two different dollar amounts do not match, the dollar amount in words will control the amount of the check.
