Instructions

    • 1

Plant nun's orchids in a combination of soil and peat or decomposed pine bark. The ratio of soil to peat should be approximately 40 percent soil and 60 percent peat. Nun's orchids flourish in this rich mixture. The pH level of the soil should measure between 5.5 and 6.3.

    • 2

Irrigate nun's orchids regularly with fresh water. Water that is too soft can interfere with the flower's growth. The soil should be moist most of the time. When new growth has reached maturity, the top 2 inches of soil can be allowed to run on the drier side.

    • 3

Give the plant a sunny spot in which to live, but one that provides partial shade during the mid-day heat. Full-time, direct sun can cause the orchid to become parched and burned.

    • 4

Bring nun's orchids inside when temperatures dip below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. This gives the plant a cushion in the colder weather; the plant can sustain major damage in sub-freezing temperatures.

    • 5

Fertilize nun's orchids quarterly with fish emulsion to ensure the plant is getting adequate nutrients. Add 3 tbsp. of fish emulsion per gallon of water.
