How to Wire a VTEC Controller

VTEC stands for Variable Valve Timing and Electronic Lift Control. The VTEC unit electronically selects between two different camshaft positions and allows the engine to perform optimally at both high and low revolutions per minute (rpm). VTEC was invented by Honda, and it is already included in many Honda vehicles. To install a VTEC in a vehicle that does not already have one, it must be connected to the Engine Control Unit (ECU).

Things You'll Need

  • VTEC unit
  • Wire cutters
  • Wire caps
  • Plugs
  • Make a note of your vehicle’s setting data regarding audio, navigation and other car electronics backed by battery power. Remove the battery cable from the negative terminal. Doing this will prevent possible short circuits. Refer to your vehicle’s wiring diagram and locate the Engine Control Unit (ECU).

  • Connect the wiring harness of the VTEC to the ports on the the ECU. Attach the red wire on the VTEC to the ignition power port. The green wire connects to the engine revolution signal port. Attach the gray wire to the throttle signal port. Attach the black wire and the brown wire to the grounding conductor on the ECU. Attach the orange wire to the VTC cam signal port. Attach the light blue wire to the TDC signal port. Attach the blue wire to the VTM signal port. Refer to the wiring diagram provided with your VTEC unit throughout this process.

  • Cut the pressure signal wire connected to the ECU. Install a plug at this point. Connect the VTEC wiring harness to the plug. Cap any unused wires. Reconnect the negative terminal of the battery. Program the VTEC according to the manufacturer’s specifications.
