The baseball cap is a classic American accessory for both men and women. Baseball caps are available with two different styles of band -- adjustable bands, to fit a range of head sizes, and fitted bands, to fit a specific head size. Fitted caps contain either no elastic in the band at all and are designed to fit your head exactly, or contain some elastic so that they fit a certain range of head sizes. Fitted caps with an elastic band come in sizes small, medium and large and fit head sizes ranging from 22 inches to 24 inches in diameter. In addition to head size, the way you like to position your cap will also affect the size of cap you require. You should take both factors into consideration when buying a fitted cap to ensure that the hat you choose is the right size for you and is comfortable for however long you wear it.
Things You'll Need
- Measuring tape
- Spray bottle
Go to a custom fitted cap retailer. A clerk will measure your head and create the cap you want specifically to fit your head size. As long as the retailer has the proper licencing, he can produce any licenced team logo you desire on the cap. A retailer who makes custom fitted hats is not always easily accessible or in everyone's budget. As of 2011, custom caps can cost anywhere from 40 to over 100 dollars depending on the detailing and material. Measuring the circumference of your head with a tape measure before visiting a retailer who sells fitted hats in a range of sizes is the next best option to having a hat custom made.
Bring your head measurement to a cap retailer and find a cap that is the same size of the circumference of your head. If you can't find a cap that matches the exact size of your head, or if the size of your head does not correspond directly to any of the sizes available, choose a cap in the closest larger size. For instance, if your head measures 22 3/8 inches, this is the highest end of a medium sized cap or a size 7 1/8 cap and you should round up to a large or size 7 1/4 cap.
Take your cap home and remove any tags or stickers. Spritz the entire cap with room temperature water until the cap is damp.
Put the cap on while it is wet and allow it to completely dry while on your head. This will cause the cap to shrink to your head's size and conform to the shape of your head. Once the hat is dry you can take it off.
