Permatex threadlocker is a line of thread-locking gels (often called threadlocker) that is used to keep bolts and fasteners from coming loose in automotive and general machinery applications. The combination of heat, vibration, and pressure can cause bolts to work themselves loose. By creating an airtight seal between the bolt and nut, Permatex Blue can prevent fastener malfunction, and eliminate the need for locking washers or other fastening hardware.
Things You'll Need
- Wire brush
- Torque wrench
- Latex gloves
Use a wire brush to thoroughly scrub the nut and bolt, making sure to remove any rust or oxidation that may be present. Make sure there are no oils or solvents on the bolt threads, as they will interfere with Permatex blue bonding.
While wearing a latex glove, put a dab of Permatex Blue on your index finger, then run the gel into the threads of the bolt. If you have a small tube with a needle applicator, you can apply it onto the bolt directly, but you will still want to avoid contact with your skin. Apply Permatex Blue at the tip of the bolt, making sure to get even coverage. You do not need to cover the entire bolt, but since Permatex Blue is hand-tool removable, you do not need to worry about over-application.
Torque the bolt onto the nut. Check the owners manual or manufacturer guidebook to find the correct torque setting. Allow the bolt and nut assembly to sit for a few minutes to allow the Permatex to fully cure and bond.
Periodically check the hardware to assure that the connection is secure. Permatex makes gels in higher strength (Purple and Red). If you find your hardware is not remaining properly fastened with the use of Permatex Blue, you may want to consider moving to a higher grade.
