Calrose is a medium grain rice.

Calrose rice is a California created medium grain rice, also called Japanese or sushi rice. Calrose rice is tender and slightly chewy with a heftier texture than long grain rice. Calrose rice is suitable for all dishes, especially sticky rice recipes such as sushi or rice balls. Homai is a brand that carries white and brown Calrose rice. Since the brand does not affect how this type of rice is cooked, these directions can be applied to any brand of Calrose or medium grain rice. Rinsing the rice prior to use is not required, unless following the sticky rice method. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Three quart heavy bottom metal pot, with lid
  • Electric rice cooker
  • Microwave
  • Microwave safe bowl and lid
  • 1 cup Calrose rice
  • 1-1/2 to 1-3/4 water

Instructions

  1. Stovetop

    • 1

      Pour 1 cup rice and 1-3/4 water into heavy bottomed pan.

      Heat rice and water to boiling.

    • 3

      Reduce heat to low, cover and cook for 15 minutes.

      Fluff rice with a fork and serve.

    Electric Rice Cooker

    • 5

      Pour rice and water into rice cooker pan.

    • 6

      Turn switch to ON or set timer for when you need the rice to be fully cooked.

      When cooker switches off, fluff rice with a fork and serve.

    Microwave

    • 8

      Pour rice and water into microwave safe bowl.

    • 9

      Cover with waxed paper or a microwave safe lid. Cook on high for five minutes or until the water boils.

      Cook on medium for 15 minutes.

      Fluff rice with a fork and serve.

    Sticky or Hawaiian Rice

    • 12

      Cover one cup uncooked rice with water. Stir the rice and water with your hand or a spoon until water becomes cloudy.

      Pour off water and rub the rice grains together with your hand.

      Repeat steps one and two until the water runs clear. This will probably require about four rinses.

      Add 1 1/3 cup water to 1 cup rice. Cook with any of the aforementioned methods. This makes Japanese sticky rice.

      Instead of rinsing rice, soak 1 cup of rice in two cups of water for four hours. Drain water and steam on medium low heat for 15 to 20 minutes. This makes Thailand sticky rice. Soaking the rice allows the grains to absorb enough water to steam cook the extra starch.

Tips & Warnings

  • Add seasonings like butter, oil, salt, pepper and other spices to rice and water before cooking or after the rice has cooked, dependent upon your tastes.

  • Handle all hot bowls with oven mitts.

  • Be careful when uncovering cooked rice, as steam can burn.
