DIY: Target Stand

DIY: Target Stand thumbnail
Use PVC pipe to construct a basic target stand.

A target stand provides a stable platform for the attachment of a paper target when target shooting with a rifle or pistol. Target stands are positioned down range from a shooting position to provide the opportunity for sighting in or practice with a range of weapons. Target stands are available for purchase from a variety of retail sources; however, constructing a stand requires only a few basic components and a short time commitment.

Things You'll Need

  • 4 polyvinyl chloride (PVC) T connections (2-inch)
  • 2-inch PVC pipe: 4 pieces 4 inches long, 1 piece 20 inches long, 4 pieces 12 inches long
  • 2 six-foot furring strips
  • PVC glue
  • Spring clips
  • Staples

Instructions

    • 1

Hold a PVC T connector and insert a 12-inch length of PVC pipe into both ends of the connector. Insert a 4-inch length of PVC into the right angle opening of the T connector. Twist the lengths of PVC pipe to secure them in place to form a base support.

    • 2

Assemble a second base support by following the same steps. Insert a 12-inch length of PVC pipe into both ends of a T connector and insert a 4-inch length of PVC pipe into the right angle opening.

    • 3

Insert the end of a 20-inch long piece of PVC pipe into the right angle opening on a T connector. Place a T connector on both ends of the 20-inch length of pipe.

    • 4

Insert a 4-inch length of PVC pipe into one end of both T connectors attached to the 20-inch length of pipe. Place the 4-inch pipe on the same end of both T connectors to serve as a support for the upright wooden target support arms.

    • 5

Assemble the base of the target stand. Hold one of the assembled base supports and insert the 4-inch PVC pipe extending from the support into the T connector at one end of the 20-inch cross support. Attach the second base support to the T connector on the opposite end of the cross support.

    • 6

Set the assembled base on the ground. Insert the 6-foot wood furring strips into the 4-inch PVC pipes extending upward from the stand.

    • 7

Attach a paper target to the wood furring strips with spring clips or staples.

Tips & Warnings

  • Apply a thin coat of PVC cement to the connection points of the PVC pipe and T connectors to make the connections permanent.
