Legally download music for your iPod through iTunes.

Anyone who owns an iPod must download iTunes, a free application used to legally purchase music files (as well as other media) and sync those files to their devices. A wide selection of music can be found on iTunes, with songs costing between $0.69 and $1.29 each.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to apple.com/itunes and click on the "Download" button to download the iTunes application.

    • 2

      Launch iTunes.

    • 3

Connect your iPod to your computer using the USB data cable that came with your device.

    • 4

Wait several seconds until iTunes recognizes your device. When it has, the name of your device will appear in the task menu at the left side of the window.

    • 5

Click on the name of your device to choose your syncing options. If you choose to automatically sync, your device will sync with your iTunes library as soon as it is connected. If you choose to manually mange your media, you will need to drag and drop songs into your device and delete songs you don't want individually.

    • 6

Create an Apple ID, also known as an iTunes store account. Click on the "Store" tab at the top of the iTunes page, then click on "Create Account" from the drop-down menu. You will then be prompted to agree to Apple's Terms and Conditions, complete a registration form and connect a credit card to your account.

Click on "iTunes Store" in the task menu at the left of the window to start shopping for music. You can browse through titles alphabetically or in pre-assembled categories. There is also a search box for finding specific songs, albums and artists.

    • 8

Preview songs before you buy them by clicking on the small arrow in front of each song (when viewing an album) or the "Preview" button underneath a song (when viewing singles).

    • 9

Purchase an album or song by clicking on the "Buy" button under the album art (for an album) or beside the song (for singles). The price of the album or song will be written on the button.

    • 10

Type in your Apple ID email and password when prompted to do so. This is to confirm your purchase.

    • 11

Close the iTunes store to return to the iTunes application. The album or song you purchased will appear in your iTunes library once it has downloaded.

    • 12

Wait until your device syncs the album or song (if you choose to automatically sync to iTunes) or drag the individual songs and drop them on the name of your device in the task menu (if you chose to manually manage your device).

    • 13

Disconnect your device from your computer when prompted to do so.
