Instructions

    • 1

Set up a dehumidifier in the room with the stuck window. Put the unit on an even surface, such as an end table, next to the window. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for operating the dehumidifier. Let it run for 48 hours.

    • 2

Lift the window after the dehumidifier is done working. It should remove enough moisture from the air and the wood to get the window to stop sticking.

    • 3

Check outside at the exterior of the window frame, if the dehumidifier did not completely stop the window from sticking. Lay a wood block on the windowsill on the right side. Slip the end of a pry bar between the window and the sill and use the block as a lever to carefully pull up on the sill.

Move the block over to the left side of the frame and repeat the lifting action with the pry bar in that corner. Continue alternating sides gently until the window opens.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep your curtains open at night. The temperature drops can cause condensation buildup on windows overnight, making them stick.

  • According to Home Tips, if the window opens, clean, sand and lubricate the window tracks to help prevent further issues.

  • Always be careful when using force around glass. Wear gloves, if needed.
