How to Use Windows Boot Disk

A Windows boot disk (or disc if it is a CD or DVD) allows you to boot to the Windows operating system if your boot files are damaged from a virus or accidentally deleted. You boot to the operating system using the boot disk, then you can replace the boot files that are missing or corrupt. This avoids the need to reinstall Windows in case your boot files are damaged. The Windows installation DVD is also a boot disc.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the boot disk (or disc) in your computer's drive. Your system detects a boot CD, DVD or diskette if it is inserted in the drive prior to rebooting.

    • 2

Press "Ctrl+Alt+Del" on your keyboard, or press the "Reset" button on your computer case. Both methods reboot the computer and detect the boot CD, DVD or diskette in the drive.

    • 3

Choose "Boot Windows Normally" from the boot options. Your Windows operating system boots normally. Boot files are only needed until you get to the Windows login screen. Log in to Windows with your user name and password.

    • 4

Click the Windows "Start" button. Click "Computer." Double-click the drive letter that contains your boot disk. Open a second window using the same process, except double-click the "C" drive. You have two windows open, so you can copy and paste the boot files from the disk to the hard drive.

    • 5

Drag and drop the three boot files on your boot disk from the boot disk window to the "C" window. This step fixes or replaces any damaged or deleted boot files. Remove the boot disk and keep it in a safe location in case you need it again.
