How to Record Focus Groups
Focus groups are used as a marketing research strategy to test new concepts and gain customer insights. This type of research is also used a preliminary research method before conducting research on a larger scale. Recording a focus group is important so that marketers can review the footage for direct quotes or for product insights. Having a recording is also important for marketers who were not able to view the focus groups in person.

1
Set up the microphone or video camera in an area that will pick up verbal interactions and body language most clearly. Microphones can be set up in the middle of the table. Test microphones and video cameras in different areas of the room before the focus group to determine the best locations.
-
2
Test the recording devices, which should be plugged in, turned on and set to record. Remedy any recording issues before the focus group arrives.

3
Reduce background noise by closing doors and windows. Focus group participants should shut off their cell phones and other electronic devices. Shuffling paper can also be a distracting noise, so limit the amount of materials focus group participants handle. Only one person should speak at a time, so ask participants to refrain from all side conversations.

4
Tell focus groups participants to speak loudly and clearly. Microphones may not pick up voices from people who are quiet or mumble.
-
5
Write down important quotes or observations with pen and paper when observing focus groups. Taking notes is an alternative way to record focus groups if microphones and video recorders are not available or malfunction during a recording.
