How to Decorate a Long Interior Wall
A long interior wall can be an intimidating challenge for the home decorator. The temptation is either to leave it much too bare or to clutter it up too much. One good way to approach a long wall is to break up the length by adding smaller shapes and squares that help to cut the long visual line. You can also exploit and highlight that long visual line with bold patterns, built-ins and rich color. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Alter the wall to give the eyes a stopping place so they're not pulled down the middle of the wall. Add a chair rail, frame doors or crown molding. Install built-ins like shelves and credenza drawers to store books and display accent pieces.

2
Paint the walls, or apply wallpaper to them. Paint the architectural accents in bold or contrasting hues, or cover the wall lengths with a richly patterned wallpaper. Paint the door, window or wall at the end of the hall or room.

Incorporate accent lighting. Affix track lights or scones above individual wall hangings, or hang several large lanterns or pendant lights down the center of the room or hallway.

4
Place a long runner or several smaller rugs along your long interior wall. Choose a bold color or pattern, especially if you've chosen neutral or clean walls. Lengthwise stripes counter shelving or walls with more hangings on them, and horizontal stripes soften the austere length of a clean, bare hallway.

Put something on the walls. Place large paintings or wall hangings on either side, or break up the length by grouping photos, art and hangings into mini gallery displays.

6
Add a small furniture piece for irregular corners or niches. A side table or repurposed vanity serves as a lovely display for fresh-cut flowers, and an antique school desk works well for an entryway organization center for keys, bills, gloves and hats.
