How to Kill a Maximillian Sunflower
The Maximillian sunflower is recognizable by its multiple bright yellow flowers that run up and down the stem. Aside from ornamental qualities, the sunflower is grown for its edible roots. A detriment of the Maximillian sunflower is its invasive habit, which sometimes can take over a small yard or garden. Cut the seed heads from the plant, using hand pruners, and discard them in a trash bin. Be careful when handling the seed heads to ensure they do not reach the ground.

Cut the stem of the sunflower plant at ground level, or as close to the ground as possible. Break the stems into manageable pieces and discard them in a trash bin.

Dig the root system out of the ground, using a shovel. Get as much of the root system out to reduce the chance of new plant growth.

Cover the area with at least 4 inches of mulch. Maximillian sunflowers require full sunlight to survive, so a lack of sunlight makes new growth nearly impossible.
