How to Wire a Second Motion Sensor to a Light That Has a Motion Sensor

You can upgrade your security system by attaching a second motion sensor to a light that already has a motion sensor installed. The advantage is that the second sensor can be aimed at a different angle at the location being monitored. You can purchase a motion sensor from a home and garden shop or a security supply center. You'll also need a few household tools. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Place the second motion detector sensor on a work surface. Strip 1/2 inch of insulation from the ends of all of the wires attached to the back of the sensor with wire strippers.

    • 2

Switch off the circuit breaker to interrupt power to the existing motion sensor light fixture. Place a ladder against the wall so you can reach the fixture.

    • 3

Remove the screws from the fixture with a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the fixture off the wall and stretch the wires attached to its back taut.

    • 4

Remove the screw-tab connectors wound around the twisted pairs of wires. Use a counter-clockwise motion to remove the connectors.

    • 5

Twist the exposed ends of the like-colored wires attached to the second motion sensor around the like-colored twisted pairs of wires. Place a screw-tab connector onto the twisted pairs of wires. Keep screwing the connector on until it feels secure.

    • 6

Push the wiring into the hole in the wall. Place the motion sensor light fixture over the hole, against the wall. Screw wood screws through the screw holes with a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 7

Place the second motion detector sensor on the wall, as far away from the fixture as the connected wires will allow. Screw wood screws through the brackets on each side of the sensor and into the wall.

    • 8

Apply silicone sealant to cover the wires going from the second motion detector sensor to the fixture. Let the sealant set for 10 minutes before applying another coating. Restore the electric power at the fuse box.
