How to Get a Felt Poodle on a Skirt
Poodle skirts are common 1950s costumes. These knee-length skirts were popular with teenage girls in that era. The skirts were often a solid color, like pastel pink or blue, with a design above the hem. The designs were commonly poodles, hence the name. It's easy to add a poodle applique to a skirt to create one of these iconic garments.

Using Fusible Web
-
1
Choose a premade poodle patch or make your own. Embroidered patches are available at many fabric and craft stores. Some patches even come ready to be ironed on.
-
2
To make a patch, draw a poodle pattern or print one from the Internet. Trace the pattern onto a piece of felt. Carefully cut the pattern out of the felt.
-
-
3
Cut fusible web to fit the shape of your patch. Fusible web comes in a roll or sheet and can be bought at fabric and craft stores.
-
4
Place the poodle in the desired position on the skirt with the fusible web underneath the patch. Make sure all of the webbing sits between the patch and the skirt.
-
5
Place a cloth over the patch and apply a hot iron to the area to melt the fusible web. Wait for the fusible web to cool before washing or wearing.
Other Methods
-
6
Use fabric glue to secure the patch. Select glue made specifically for fabric, as other glues may damage the skirt or dissolve in water. Apply the glue to the back of the patch and carefully place it in the desired position on the skirt. Do not use too much glue or the excess may seep from the edges of the patch. Wait for 24 hours or the length of time specified on the package before washing or wearing.
-
7
Sew the poodle patch to the skirt. Pin the patch to the skirt in the desired position. Sew carefully around the edges of the patch. Pick a thread color that matches the patch. Even if you've attached the patch with other adhesives, stitching the edge attaches the patch more securely, as fusible webbing may weaken after several washes or wears.
-
8
Decorate your poodle patch. Add sparkle with glitter glue and rhinestones. Use ribbons to make a collar and leash for your poodle. Use buttons for eyes and a nose. Glue the embellishments or stitch them through the patch to make it even more secure. Make sure to allow adequate drying time for glue.
