How to Put a Glass Block in a Window
Glass block is most often found in basement windows and bathroom windows.You install it directly into a window opening. The windows are typically wider than tall. They are much thicker than a normal window and are stronger because of that thickness. The strength acts as a safety measure for any homeowner. - Tape measure
- 2-by-2 wood block
- Drill
- Screws
- Glass block
- Wood wedges
- Gloves
- Mortar
- Margin trowel
- Striking tool
- Caulk gun
- Caulk

Run a tape measure across the length and width of the opening, and record the measurements. Install a 2-by-2-inch wood block on the inside of the opening so the glass block does not fall through. Screw it directly in the center along the top of the opening with a power drill.

Set the new window in the opening, and center it. Slide two small wooden wedges along the bottom of the window opening to prop the window up.

Fill the opening underneath the glass block window with mortar. Spread the mortar out under the opening using a margin trowel. Cover the entire area from the brick up to the bottom of the window. Remove the wedges from the bottom, and use mortar to fill the area where they were located.

Spread the mortar around the sides of the block just as you completed the bottom section. Smooth out the mortar with a striking tool. Run the tool over the mortar to even it out so it lies flush with the brick.

Run a bead of caulk around the entire perimeter of the window with a caulk gun to seal it in place. Seal the gap between the glass block panel and the sill plate located at the top of the window. Wait one hour for the mortar to cure.
