D.I.Y. How to Replace a Home AC Filter
There are many reasons to replace an air conditioner filter, the foremost being the health of your family. The second is to keep your air conditioner running like new. Air conditioner filters remove particles from the air like dust and lint, which clog air conditioner fans. Replacing the filter is recommended about once every six months, but you should replace yours more frequently if your environment calls for it. Turn off the air conditioner by turning off the breaker to the unit in your breaker box. Push the breaker to the off position by flipping the switch.

Locate the air conditioner filter. It is a large rectangular item with a soft, paper cover around the border and a fine mesh inside. Many air conditioner filters also have reinforcing wire mesh across both sides. On many machines it is located on the front where it is easily accessed.

Remove the filter by pulling it up and out of the air conditioner. Two vertical slots, and one horizontal slot on the bottom, hold the filter in place. Pull the top and slide it out.

Note the measurements of the filter, or better yet, take it with you to the store when you purchase a new one. This way all you need to do is size up the appropriate filter and make your purchase. Or, write down the filter dimensions on a piece of paper and take it with you. The dimensions are written on the border area of the filter.

Slide the new filter into the slot which used to contain the old filter. Turn the air conditioner back on.
