How to Change Your Peace Corps Nomination

How to Change Your Peace Corps Nomination thumbnail
The Peace Corp gives you the opportunity to help people in need around the world.

Joining the Peace Corps lets you experience new environments and cultures, because the Corps allows you to serve in an area of the world that you prefer. These interactions become a pathway that will allow you to widen your perspective and knowledge of the world. However, unforeseen circumstances, both positive and negative, could make you want to change your location after you submit an application. Do not worry, though: There is hope for a second choice!

Complete a Peace Corps application. To get nominated to your preferred country, select that country in the drop-down box on your application. If the preferred country, language or school is not listed, select "Other" and discuss your selection in your interview. If you have already submitted an application but have changed your mind about your preferred country, you must also communicate this during your interview.

Schedule an interview. The Peace Corps should contact you to arrange an interview within two weeks after you submit your application. Make a good impression on the interviewer, especially if you are asking him to change your preference. If there is a particular reason for changing your selection, tell him, because changing the selection later can cause more problems.

Set up a time to meet with your recruiter for nomination. If you have passed the preliminary checks, a recruiter will recommend that you be assigned to a specific area based on your initial choice, or your second choice as discussed with the interviewer. Speaking with the recruiter is your last chance to change your placement preference before it becomes permanent. It is the recruiter who determines whether a change can be made to your application.

Tips & Warnings

  • Carefully consider your choices before completing the application to avoid problems such as changing your nomination choice.
