Futon Assembly Instructions

Assembling any futon frame follows roughly the same process, regardless of whether the frame is wood or metal, and independent of the manufacturer or model. Most futons are either full or queen size; the frame itself will have the same structure in either case. Set aside 30 to 60 minutes to assemble your futon frame for the first time, and about half that once you've gotten some practice. In all cases, if your manufacturer's directions vary from those given here, you should defer to the manufacturer's guidelines. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Clear the floor of the area where you want to set up the futon.

    • 2

Check the side rails of the back panel of the futon frame, looking for the sliders. These are round knobs attached to the rail. If they aren't there, find them in your kit, and attach them by screwing them into the mounting holes in the side rails. In many cases, the sliders will already be attached.

    • 3

Slide the seat panel of the futon frame between the forks at the bottom of the back panel. Attach them by sliding in the cotter pins, and locking them in place.

    • 4

      Set the futon frame aside.

    • 5

Set the arm pieces opposite one another, about as far apart as the futon is wide. Orient them so the grooves for the spacers are on the inside faces of the arm pieces.

    • 6

Set the front spacer -- the rail that connects the arms and supports the futon -- in place between the arm pieces. Attach it at either end according to the manufacturer's directions. This is the step that will vary most from model to model. Tighten down any screws or bolts 1/4 to 1/3 of the way, to leave space to insert the futon frame.

    • 7

Attach the rear spacer the same way you did the front spacer.

    • 8

Slide the futon frame into position by inserting the sliders into the grooves on the inside faces of the end pieces.

    • 9

Tighten down the slider connections all the way, locking the sliders in their grooves.

    • 10

Set the futon mattress in place on the frame.
