How to Back Up Ebooks on the Nook

How to Back Up Ebooks on the Nook thumbnail
Protect your ebook library by backing it up on your home computer.

When you register your Nook with Barnes & Noble, the website automatically creates an online library to maintain copies of all ebooks purchased from Barnes & Noble. If you lose the ebook files on the Nook, restore your ebooks by connecting the Nook to the Internet and syncing with the online library. However, if you purchase ebook files from another vendor, you can backup these files on a home computer. Directions work for both Nook 3G and Nook Color.

Instructions

    • 1

Right click on the desktop of your computer. Place the mouse over the menu item named "New." When the drop down menu opens, select "Folder" at the top of the list. The icon for a new folder will appear on the desktop with the name of the folder highlighted.

    • 2

Click on the name of the folder and type "Nook ebook Backup." Do not include a dash between e and book. The computer will reject it as an invalid file name.

    • 3

Connect the Nook's USB cable to an empty port on the computer. The Nook does not require a specific port to operate.

    • 4

Connect the other end of the USB cable to the port located at the bottom of the Nook. It takes up to a minute for the computer to recognize the Nook. Once the computer acknowledges the Nook, a dialog box labeled "Removable Disk (E:)" will appear with the option "Open folder to view files in Windows Explorer" highlighted. Click "OK." If the open folder option is not selected, highlight and click "OK." A new window will open that contains several folder icons.

    • 5

Click and drag the folder titled "my b&n downloads" to the Nook ebook Backup folder created in Step 3 and release the icon. The files will automatically copy.

    • 6

Repeat Steps 6 and 7 for the folder titled "my documents." This folder contains any books or documents not downloaded from the Barnes & Noble website.
