Part of what makes a fireplace stand out is the mantel above it. Mantels can be ornate or simple. The type of mantel you install should be based upon the room's decor. Mantels are also sturdy enough to hold objects. Use the fireplace mantel as a shelf for books, figurines or anything else you want to show off.   • Tape measure
  • 4-foot level
  • Stud finder
  • Drill
  • Phillips-head drill bit
  • 1 1/2-inch screws
  • Hammer
  • Finishing nails
  • Liquid nails

Instructions

      Place the new mantel over the fireplace and center it. Trace along the mantel's top edge and both sides with a pencil. Lower the mantel from the wall and turn it over. Remove the mounting board from the back of the mantel.

      Measure the length of the mantel and divide by two to find the center. Mark the center onto the line on the wall. Measure the length of the mounting board and divide by two to find the center. Mark this measurement onto the mounting board.

      Set the mounting board aside. Place a 4-foot level on the wall, holding it vertically. Place the edge of the level on the center mark on the line. Position the level straight up and down. Trace along the edge of the level, marking the center.

      Measure the width of the top of the mantel. Add 1/8 inch to this measurement. Transfer this measurement to the wall, measuring from the top line down on the right side and left side.

      Hold a 4-foot level on the wall, connecting the two marks. Draw a line across the top edge of the level. Run a stud finder along the line to locate the center of the studs. Indicate the stud's centers with two small Xs along the top line.

      Place the mounting board on the wall. Line up the center mark on the board with the center line on the wall. The top edge of the mounting board should be along the bottom line. Place a level on top of the mounting board to ensure it is sitting straight.

      Secure the mounting board to the wall with two screws and a drill. The screws must secure the board to the two studs you found and marked in Step 5. Use masonry screws if the mantel is being secured to brick.

      Position the mantel onto the mounting board. Hammer finishing nails through the top of the mantel and into the edge of the mounting board to secure it in place. Spread liquid nails over the opening in the back of the mantel if you do not wish to use nails.
