There are a number of medals and awards for Merchant Marine officers.

Merchant Marine awards are given for humanitarian nature, leadership, outstanding achievement and recognition for service in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. These awards are issued by The Maritime Administration and Department of Transportation. In some cases the medal requires the approval of the Maritime Administrator.

      Go to the Maritime Administration's website (http://www.marad.dot.gov/mariners_landing_page/mariner_medals/mariner_medals.htm) and review the medals awarded to servicemen. Read what each one is for and the requirements to receive them.

      Send proper documentation along with a written request to the Maritime Administration; make sure it includes the applicant's full name, "Z" or book number and copies of voyage discharge certificates. Contact the records department of your branch to obtain a copy of your discharge form if you don't have a copy. You can also ask for a list of the medals you have received.

      Fill out Form DD-149 to apply for an award for the first time. In addition, submit your military records, eyewitness statements and other evidence of eligibility.
