How to Highlight in Photoshop

How to Highlight in Photoshop thumbnail
Use Photoshop to highlight the part of an image you want to work on.

Photoshop is an image-editing program for the computer that allows you to alter and create your own digital images. Selecting a section of the image to highlight it sets apart that piece of the image from the rest of the picture. While a section of an image is highlighted, you will only change that part of the picture; the rest of the image will remain unchanged. This is useful when you need to erase parts of an image or add details to a particular section of a picture, such as the background.

Instructions

    • 1

      Launch Photoshop on your computer.

    • 2

Click "File" and then click "Open" to browse your computer for the image you want to edit.

    • 3

Double-click the image to load it in Photoshop.

    • 4

Click the "Magic Wand" tool in the toolbar.

    • 5

Type a numerical value, from 0 to 255, in the "Tolerance" text box. A lower tolerance causes the tool to highlight only colors very similar to the pixel you click, while a higher tolerance will highlight a wider range of colors.

    • 6

Place a check in the box next to the "Contiguous" setting in the toolbar if this setting is not already selected.

    • 7

Click the area of your image you would like to highlight. The "Magic Wand" tool will automatically highlight all contiguous areas that contain a similar color to the pixel you clicked.

    • 8

Hold the "Shift" key on your computer and click on another part of the image with the "Magic Wand" tool to highlight another section. Repeat this process until you've highlighted the full area of the picture you would like to edit. You can now paint, erase or change this highlighted section without affecting any other part of the image.
