Purchasing ripped jeans can be very expensive.

Ripped jeans, commonly referred to as distressed jeans in the fashion industry, can be very pricey. Instead of paying top dollar for a pair of trendy jeans with holes in them, create your own using an existing pair of jeans. Creating holes in your jeans with the white thread showing, known as the threaded look, can be done in less than an hour. If unfamiliar with creating ripped jeans, start off small. You can always make the holes bigger later on.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on the jeans and stand in front of a mirror. Determine where you would like to place the holes. Many popular areas include the knees and smaller holes on the thighs.

    • 2

Draw a straight line on the area with a marker. Remove the jeans and lay them on a flat surface.

    • 3

Locate the marks you made and cut the jeans with a pair of scissors. For small holes, cut in a straight line. For large holes, cut out a small section. The hole will get bigger the more the jeans are worn and washed.

    • 4

Place the sharp edge of the razor blade along the cut and quickly pull at the material with the blade. This will fray the cloth, creating white strands. Continue until you are satisfied with the look of the holes.

    • 5

Wash and dry the jeans. Washing the jeans will soften the look of the holes so they look more natural and not handmade.

Tips & Warnings

  • Supervise children around scissors and razor blades.
