Traveling to Barcelona will allow you to practice your Spanish.

Learning to read Spanish is a useful skill if you are planning on traveling to the Spanish-speaking world. Although Spanish speakers use the same alphabet as the English-speaking world, there are some key differences in pronunciation. Learning to understand Spanish better is crucial in improving your reading ability. Similarly, an improved reading ability helps with all-round Spanish speaking. Spanish can be a simple language to pick up at a beginner level, meaning with a little practice, you will soon be able to read words and sentences.

Instructions

    • 1

Learn to read the phonics, or the basic sounds in Spanish. For example, if you are reading Spanish as spoken in Spain, the "v" is pronounced as a "b", so "vamos" sounds like "bamos". The "c" in Spanish is pronounced "th" when at the beginning of a word, meaning that the number five in Spanish "cinco" is pronounced "thinko." Familiarize yourself with the basic sounds and you will be able to read words in Spanish.

    • 2

Improve your vocabulary. Although you do not need to understand every word to read Spanish at a beginner level, understanding key words will help you understand the context of the sentence. Learn the numbers, and key verbs, such as "to be", "to go" and "to have."

    • 3

Read a sentence, and then attempt to translate it. This will keep you engaging with the text rather than reading it without taking it in. You will learn to see key words in a sentence, and your speed and confidence will improve. You will also be able to work out the meaning of a sentence from the context provided by the previous sentence.

    • 4

Practice reading to improve your ability. The more you read in Spanish, the better you will become. Improve other areas of Spanish, such as your listening and speaking, which will help you with your reading. The more you practice, the better your all-around Spanish will be, and your reading will improve.
