1
Choose an area to grow the watermelon that has room for vines to grow 12 feet in each direction.
-
2
Obtain seeds that have been created specifically for growing larger watermelons.
-
-
3
Plant the seeds about one inch under the soil and water them often. Keep the soil moist but don't let it become saturated.
-
4
Add peanut hulls or manure to the soil before you plant the seeds if possible. Scatter 10 lbs. of 10-10-10 commercial fertilizer in a five- to six-foot radius around the hill, and apply liquid fertilizer around the base of the plant each week.
-
5
Apply a 20-10-20 fertilizer until the flowers of the plant bloom, then a 20-20-20 until the growing season has ended.
-
6
Prune any other fruit from the vine once a watermelon has formed and you are certain it will set. You must give your big watermelon room to grow.
-
7
Position the watermelon on a slight hill on top of some mulch as it grows to avoid it sitting in standing water.
-
8
Shelter the melon from direct sunlight by erecting some form of shelter that only shades the melon. A large beach umbrella will suffice. Place a small fence or screen around the watermelon to deter any animals that fancy a taste.
