How to Make My Own Magnetic Book Marks for Free

Magnetic bookmarks work best to mark multiple pages, unlike this single-page bookmark.

Bookmarks can fall out often if the book is jostled around too much. One way to prevent this is to use a magnetic bookmark, but these aren't always easy to find, especially in the color or design you might want. Instead of spending money, learn to make yours from home for free with just a few steps. You can even make multiple bookmarks so that it matches the book genre.

Instructions

    • 1

Print off five different bookmark designs. You can find design templates at many craft websites. For example, you can print from the Tipnut or Martha Stewart sites.

    • 2

Cut out the bookmark along the edges of the design. This will most commonly look like a six-, eight- or 10-inch long rectangle. Some bookmark designs, however, may not be a rectangle. These will work also.

    • 3

Fold the bookmark design exactly in half. Line up the ends of the rectangle design with each other. Use one hand to hold these together against a flat surface while you use the other to crease the middle.

    • 4

Glue a magnet to the inside of each open end of the rectangle with Elmer's glue. The magnets should be about half the width of the bookmark and 1 inch up from the bottom. For example, if the bookmark is 2 inches across, then your magnets should be 1 inch across and positioned between each edge, about 1 inch from the bottom of the bookmark.

    • 5

Dry the glue for three or four hours. This ensures the magnets won't fall off the bookmark. Use the bookmark to mark a page by putting one magnet on the front of the page and other other at the back. Slide the bookmark down until the fold meets the top of the page and allows the magnets to snap together.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can create your own bookmark design by first cutting out a rectangle 2 inches wide by 8 inches long and then decorating the paper however you want.

  • Your bookmark will be easiest to fold in half if it is a symmetrical shape.

  • You can reuse magnets from the back of those on your fridge if you don't want to buy new ones.

  • When you glue on the magnets, ensure that opposites sides face together. This allows them to attract each other.
