How to Request the Account Balance for a Children's Trust Fund

The law provides that the beneficiary of a children's trust fund is entitled to receive the funds held in his name by the trust on his 18th birthday. Neither the trustee of the trust nor the parent or guardian of the child has authority to hold back funds unless there are indicators that the child may not have the legal capacity to manage his financial affairs -- which does not include indicators of low maturity or poor financial responsibility. For a routine check of the balance of funds in a child's trust fund, a parent or guardian can contact the trustee of the trust directly to obtain the information.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the trustee's office. Contact the office at least two weeks before the child's 18th birthday so that arrangements can be made to issue a check, if a payment is scheduled for that time.

    • 2

Request a release document from the trustee of the trust. The trustee of the trust will provide instructions for completing the release document.

    • 3

Complete the release document as directed. Be sure to include the child's current mailing address and contact number on the document.

    • 4

Sign and date the release document. Once it is received, the trustee will calculate the balance of the fund, inform you of the balance and, if necessary, forward a check to the child on her 18th birthday.

Tips & Warnings

  • Contact a local probate court to request a hearing if you believe your child does not have the legal capacity to manage his financial affairs.
