How to Use Tanks With Nitrox

How to Use Tanks With Nitrox thumbnail
Dive computers can be set to account for nitrox.

Enriched air nitrox is air that has had the partial pressure--percentage--of the oxygen in the mix raised above the normal level of 21 percent. Scuba divers use nitrox to extend their potential bottom time from the limits that they are permitted with air, as there is less nitrogen--which the body doesn't use--in the mix. Using a tank filled with nitrox requires special procedures.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit your local dive center. Order your nitrox fill at your desired percentage of oxygen.

    • 2

Calibrate the oxygen analyzer. Press the calibrate button and run a stream of normal air through it from a regular air cylinder. Place the analyzer over the cylinder valve and slowly open the valve handle. Take care not to open the air cylinder fully, as too much air can damage the analyzer. The reading on the analyzer should display 21 percent.

    • 3

Analyze the nitrox cylinder. Place the analyzer over the cylinder valve and slowly open the valve handle. Keep the valve open until the display on the analyzer gives a constant reading. Close the cylinder. Note the reading an the maximum operating depth for this nitrox mix on a label on the side of the tank.

    • 4

Plan your dive using nitrox dive tables, or set your dive computer to nitrox mode and the nitrox percentage being used.

    • 5

Attach your BCD and dive regulator to the tank. If using nitrox over a mix of 40 percent--which requires further qualification--then you will need to use oxygen clean regulators. Turn on the nitrox tank.

    • 6

Dive with the nitrox tank, taking care to stay within the depth limits of the nitrox mix and within the allowed bottom time.

Tips & Warnings

  • Diving with nitrox should only be done by people who have been certified in its use. Risks associated with nitrox diving include oxygen toxicity, which can result in drowning. A nitrox course takes one day and is worth it to add the extra skill to your dive knowledge.
