How To Check If a Domain Name Is Available

A domain name is a central Internet address such as "Google.com" that serves as a central hub of a website. You can only buy domain names that are available and not being used. There are a variety of Web services online that sell domain names where you can check whether the name you want is available.

Instructions

    • 1

Navigate to GoDaddy (see Resources). This site is often advertised on TV and sells domains like ".com " for commercial sites and ".org" for nonprofit organizations. Enter a name into the search box and press "Return" to get a list of all domain names available.

    • 2

Visit the site Register (see Resources). This site has a prominent search box on the front page with a drop-down menu so you can search for names with ".com," ".net" or ".biz" domains. Type in the name and click "Search." It will check whether or not the domain name is open as well as give a list of all the domain extensions available for that word.

    • 3

Open your browser to Network Solutions (see Resources). Enter up to 10 domain names to check in the box on the left. Check off the domain extensions you want, such as ".biz," "com" or ".us" on the right and click "Search Now" to check for names.
