1
Prepare a planting site that gets at least six hours of sunlight daily and does not have any drainage issues. The site should also provide some protection from wind, as delphiniums can fall over due to their height and weight.
-
2
Cover the planting site with a 2-inch layer of organic compost, and sprinkle the site with granular fertilizer as directed on the package. Do this after the last frost passes in your area. Till the compost and fertilizer into the soil with a garden tiller at a depth of 8 inches.

3
Dig a hole in the planting site that is twice the width of the flower's pot and just as deep. Remove the delphinium flower from its pot and lower it into the hole so the leaves at the base of the plant are even with the soil level. Fill the hole and firm the soil with your shovel.
-
4
Water the soil around the flower until it settles. Continue to water frequently enough to keep the soil moist to the touch. Delphiniums are not drought tolerant.
