How to Change the Belt on a Honda Lawn Mower

Honda riding lawn mowers have a drive belt that powers the front or rear axle, depending on the model. When the belt gets worn or broken, the lawn mower stops moving. Replacement belts are available through the manufacturer or in most large automotive stores. During belt replacement, check the pulleys and connections to make sure nothing else needs servicing.

Things You'll Need

• Socket wrench
• Drive belt

Instructions

1. Park the lawnmower and set the brake. Remove the key from the ignition. Disconnect the spark plug wire and the negative battery cable.

2. Tip the lawnmower onto its side. Remove the bolts holding the U-bracket over the blade belt pulley with a socket wrench. Remove the U-bracket. Slip the blade belt off the blade belt pulley.

3. Loosen the bolts on the drive belt guide with a socket wrench. Move the guide out of the way.

4. Remove the belt holder flange nut with a socket wrench. Remove the belt holder.

5. Release the parking brake. Slip the drive belt from the clutch tension pulley. Remove the drive belt.

6. Install the new drive belt. Replace the belt holder and tighten the flange nut with a socket wrench. Tighten the bolts on the drive belt guide. Replace the blade belt and install the U-bracket.

7. Set the lawn mower upright. Replace the negative battery cable and spark plug wire.
