Barbering is a social and artistic profession that requires a steady hand and a patient mind to pursue it with excellence. Because nearly everyone has to get a haircut at some point, there is always job security in barbering as well. In order to become the best possible barber in the professional world, you must go through the proper steps and processes that it takes all barbers to become licensed at their craft.

Shadow a barber for a few days to find out what it is like to be in their shoes. Study their techniques, how they associate with customers, how their hands move when cutting hair and anything else that you want to learn about. You goal is to get into the mindset of being a barber and what that entails.

Read up on your state's requirements for becoming a barber. You can find this information online for any state. For most of states, all you will need is a GED or high school diploma as well as a certification from a school of barbering and cosmetology under the supervision of a licensed teacher for a certain number of hours. You will also need to be at least 16.

Research the barber schools that are in your local area. Read up on how long they have been in business to establish their credibility, how their facilities are, the experience of their staff and any other factor that might be relevant to you.

Attend barbering school. Most barbering programs take one to two years to complete. At the end of this time, you must take a written practical exam and be approved by your instructors.

Find a job at a local barber shop. Though some barbers do work from home-based shops, most new customers will only come to barbers that work at a professional barbershop. Look for local listings at barber shops near you to find a job. Once you get a job, start building rapport with customers so that they become accustomed to you and your style.
