How to Make a French Rolling Pin

French rolling pins are different than handled rolling pins since they are usually a little thinner and are generally 20 inches long. There is an advantage to the French rolling pin in the control factor. It gives the user better control when rolling out thin dough. They are simple and inexpensive to make. Does this Spark an idea?

  • 180-grit sandpaper
  • 20-inch wood dowel, 2 inches in diameter

      Rub sandpaper across length of wooden dowel. This will assure a smooth surface. The surface needs to be smooth to make sure that the dough will not stick to it.

      Examine the surface of the dowel after you have sanded it. Look for small tears in the wood. If you see any, rub that area with the sandpaper to smooth it out.

      Rub olive oil in a thin film across the surface of the pin. Place the pin in an area where it will sit upright. Repeatedly turn it over as it dries out; this process will take seven to 10 days. Adding the coat of olive oil will help keep dough from sticking to the pin during use.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you wash the French rolling pin or use it often, add another thin coat of olive oil to keep it non-stick.
